Cam Juarez

Saguaro National Park
Community Engagement Coordinator
Cam Juárez was born near Yuma, Arizona in 1972.  Growing up as the son of humble migrant farm workers and with a physical disability, Cam faced many challenges in his formative years, including poverty, bullying and systemic discrimination. Despite this, he managed to graduate high school and subsequently earn a bachelor’s & master’s degree in Political Science/Chicano Studies & Urban Planning, respectively, from the University of Arizona.

Cam has worked most of his career in youth and community development. Additionally, Cam has served as an elected governing board member of the Tucson Unified School District (2012 to 2016). He has also served on advisory boards for the Tucson Metropolitan Education Commission, the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum and was a founding member of the Southern Arizona César E. Chávez Holiday Coalition.

Cam was recruited by the National Park Service in 2015 and now serves as the park's Community Engagement and Outreach Coordinator; he is also one of the park’s Public Information Officers. In addition to these two roles, Cam also serves on the park’s leadership team.

Cam's primary responsibility at the park is to find innovative and inclusive ways to meaningfully engage underrepresented audiences and partner with local community entities to achieve this goal. In 2019, Cam's Engagement and Outreach team reported close to 55,000 direct contacts (personal contacts lasting longer than 10 minutes). His secondary goal is to help diversity efforts, so underrepresented community members see themselves represented in our national park units.

Currently, Ranger Juárez is completing the park’s Long Range Community Engagement Plan and finalizing the deployment of SAGU’s Mobile Visitor Center.

Cam and his wife have a 12-year old son, Julián, who wants to grow up to be an entomologist-mechanical engineer-park ranger.
